European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) conference

After Our Ocean conference, Malta hosted European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) conference, 7 - 10 October 2017. This conference gathered scientists, teachers and educators to spread the ocean literacy concept across Europe. Ocean literacy is understanding of human's influence on the sea and the influence of the sea on humans. Knowing these relationships people understand the need for marine conservation and the ways that make it possible. The topics discussed during the conference were the role and importance of ocean literacy in marine governance, ocean and human health, ocean literacy in the curriculum and science and society.

The special emphasis was put on knowledge transfer from scientific community to educational system and wider society. To make a positive change in the state of the ocean, ocean knowledge needs to be spread out in all segments of human society. Workshops for teachers were organised during the conference. These workshops will allow knowledge transfer from different marine sciences to students. One section of the conference was dedicated to European regional seas. EMSEA Mediterranean (EMSEA-Med) group is developing Mediterranean Sea Literacy (MSL) following ocean literacy principles. The aim of MSL is to provide fundamental knowledge about the Mediterranean Sea for the citizens of the Mediterranean region in order to understand the role of the sea in their lives (climate, health, food, economy, art, history…) and to understand the need for the conservation and sustainable development of this region.
